The first time I noticed it was a day after I cremated my dear wife, Neya. I had just returned home from work. Mitsuru—six at that time—ran over to me and gave me a hug. We entered the living room, where the maid was just starting the fire at the fireplace. As soon as the wood pellets burned brightly, Mitsuru froze, took a good look at the flickering flames and spontaneously burst into tears.
Her behaviour brought Sakaya, the maid and her nanny, over at once, concerned and alarmed. I found myself mystified. What was wrong? Had something happened while I was away? Did she hurt herself somehow? &nbs
